July 21st: APEX Leadership Luncheon Series with Michael Woo

The
Asian Professional Exchange (APEX) is proud to introduce a new series
of events to cultivate our community and champion leadership by
introducing figureheads in the Asian Pacific American (APA) community. With a more intimate crowd of attendees, this is a great opportunity to build real relationships with our special guests.
To kick off our leadership luncheon series, our special guest will be Michael Woo.
Michael Woo has a broad and deep background as an elected and appointed
official and community leader. He was the first Asian American and the
first trained urban planner elected to serve on the Los Angeles City
Council. For eight years, he represented a diverse multi-ethnic
constituency of 235,000 people (who spoke over 40 separate languages
and dialects).
Woo gave up his seat on the Council to run for Mayor of Los Angeles in
1993. He was endorsed by The Los Angeles Times, the L.A. Weekly, the
Sierra Club, the L.A. League of Conservation Voters, the L.A. County
Federation of Labor, and President Bill Clinton. Out of 24 candidates,
Woo ultimately reached second-place and received 46 percent of the vote
in the June 1993 run-off election.
Woo is a current member of the Los Angeles City Planning Commission
appointed by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. He also teaches urban planning
at USC and UCLA.
